The last two posts were dedicated to the evolving trends of International fashion. Many of you asked me to dig up the trends of Indian fashion through the years. Bollywood has always been the true trendsetter in Indian fashion. Hence we will go through the trends which were inspired by Bollywood among the public. This is the first part of the post.
1) The Serene 70s :
Back then there were no institutions in India that provided formal education in fashion nor were there any famous designers, still the '70s fashion was on top of the game. There were many trends that popped up during the decade. Oversized sunglasses, winged eyeliners or the most famous polka dots that became outstanding after Dimple Kapadia adored the front tie polka dot blouse in 'Bobby'.
2) The Evolving '80s
There was a reverberation in the Indian Fashion Industry in this decade, after the 1st generation of Indian designers came into action. Another historical step was taken in 1986 when the government in collaboration with the FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology ), New York set up NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology ) in New Delhi. Meanwhile, the Bollywood made metallics and glitters trendy through movies like 'Shaan' where Parveen Babi flaunted it and who can forget Mithun's 'I am a disco dancer ' look. During the late '80s, chiffon sarees became a turn-on after Sridevi draped it numerous times in 'Chandini'
3) The Nifty '90s :
The mom jeans were famous both in India as well as internationally. Many western trends such as off-shoulder top, Halter top, chokers were pretty trendy. In 1997 Manish Arora introduced the trend of 'God Printed T-Shirt'. Urmila Matondkar in her super hit 'Rangeela' sported the casual chic look with denim shirts and high waisted colourful pants.
Another notable example of the '60s is when Madhubala, in Mughal E Azam's song ' Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya ' made the 'Anarkali' dress so popular that it was named after her character in the movie.
These were the three golden decades when the fashion industry flourished a lot. Share this to your mum maasi and bua they may find it very relatable. Hope you liked it. Keep loving sharing and spreading love.
